TikTok Rolling Out New Safety Features for Parents

Taylor Ketchum – Vice President

Announced this month, TikTok will soon have a new feature called ‘Family Mode.’ This function will allow parents and guardians to monitor their child’s usage of the popular App. Today’s society is putting pressure on social media companies to do better in protecting children and teens whose days are consumed with online interaction.

TikTok has recently increased its marketing game, rolling out a new wave of Millennial and Gen Xers as ambassadors for the brand. You probably have seen some of your favorite celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon or Will Smith starting to use the app, many as a way to connect with their younger kids.

The popular app has recently rolled out new safety features, these include (Source Forbes):

  1. Parents will now be able to remotely restrict feed content, stop direct messages and limit how much time their child spends on the app, by linking their children’s accounts with their own profiles.
  2. TikTok also introduced new in-app prompts that encourage users to consider taking time off the app, extending the screen time management feature they introduced last year.

TikTok has sought to allay safety fears, and last year gathered some of its prominent creators to star in a video campaign to educate users about its privacy and safety controls.
