It’s no secret that social media has come a long way in the last decade and now serves as a vital addition to the marketing mix of most businesses. However, before making the leap into the social media world it is important to know the dos and don’ts. Below are three steps that social media managers should keep in mind in order to ensure that their social media presence is not only successful, but beneficial to their overall goal.

Identify Your Audience
Knowing your target audience is one of the most crucial steps in creating and maintaining a successful social media presence. By identifying your audience, you will be able to tailor your message accordingly. One of the most powerful abilities of social media is how it allows you to engage with your target audience members on a personal level. If you Incorrectly identify your audience, you run the risk that they may find your message disengaging.

Be Consistent
While this may seem like an obvious rule for most social media managers, all too often companies and individuals fail to keep their audience engaged due to a lack of content. Posting frequency will vary among platforms, but it is vital that social media managers keep their audience interested by posting relevant content as often as needed – you have to “feed the beast.”

Know Your Platforms
Any good social media manager knows that each of the major platforms that companies use today are better suited for different things. For example, companies that are looking to keep up with the latest news and up-to-date information on current events should likely use Twitter. For companies that want to use social media to connect with other businesses and potential employees, LinkedIn would likely be the best platform. Educating yourself on each platform and what it can and cannot do will ensure optimal results.
