Writing a Press Release is Similar to Baking Dessert

Meghan Jackson – Account Executive

Writing a press release is similar to baking a dessert

Before I get started, I have to admit something…I'm 36 years old and this is my first attempt at writing a blog.

I had no idea what I was going to write about until a few minutes ago. I knew I wanted this blog to catch people's attention, but I just wasn't sure how to reach that goal. In the midst of this, I also was trying to decide what dessert to bake for my husband this weekend. Then it came to me, why not write about two topics that allow me to be creative: baking desserts and writing press releases.

Believe it or not, putting together a press release is similar to assembling a dessert. Here's how the topics compare:

When it comes to writing a press release, the objective is to grab the reader's attention. My goal with this weekend's dessert is comparable. I want to create a dessert that capture's my husband's eye, and he looks forward to eating after a Sunday dinner.

Certain steps must be followed to reach both targets.

For example, a press release should include a lead sentence that makes people want to read further. Then you add the major components of who, what, when, where and why.

The dessert recipe lists ingredients and when to insert each one into the mixture. If there is anything I've learned in my years of cooking, make sure to follow the instructions and baking time.

Leave out a key ingredient in a dessert or significant component in a press release and the result could be a major disaster. Follow the recipe for both, and you will deliver an outstanding product.
